We at the Center for Business History collaborate with the Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums in a pilot project that aims to make valuable collections of transport history material accessible and useful.
Throughout history, infrastructure has shaped society and landscapes. The infrastructural investments that take place today will shape everyday life for future generations. The Center for Business History and the Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums, SMTM, are collaborating on a pilot project aimed at making valuable collections of transport history material accessible and useful. The project is financed by Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration) and takes place in close consultation with administration staff.
By compiling knowledge about existing collections and research carried out, and arranging, listing and digitizing selected archive material, the project will facilitate research on infrastructure in a historical perspective. It will also support the Swedish Transport Administration’s infrastructure planning and daily care of transport historical environments.
The collections that the project works with include the railway history collections at the Railway Museum in Gävle, the road history collections in Arboga and Kjula (east of Eskilstuna) and the aviation history collections in Arlanda.
The project aims to be completed by end of 2023.
The Centre for Business History is one of the world’s leading business archives. Since 1974, the centre has helped Swedish companies to take care of their historical material in professional archive solutions, physical and digital. In addition, the centre , through its research secretariat, conducts independent research and initiates projects in interdisciplinary collaboration. The Center for Business History’s principal is a non-profit association and the commercial services are offered through a wholly owned service company.
Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums, SMTM, is a government agency that works to preserve, develop and build up knowledge about maritime and transport cultural heritage. SMTM operates and develops the Marine Museum in Karlskrona, the Maritime History Museum, the Vasa Museum, the Wreck – Museum of Wrecks in Stockholm and the Railway Museum in Gävle.
